Energetic, joyful, socially engaging: Emily Salters has a way with people. Her personality stands out, with a natural tendency to welcome others. Formerly a Kern County teacher, those skills have served her well in the classroom and the community.
Originally from Bakersfield, Emily’s connections to the area span her life and family. She lived on the same street as her husband, Justin, as a baby. Although born just six days apart, the couple did not actually meet until high school and later reconnected after Emily’s graduation from Biola University in La Mirada. Emily’s in-laws, Jeff and Melissa Salters, are also well-known in the area as the owners of Salty’s BBQ & Catering, a business they started in 2010.
Emily and Justin have been married for 12 years. They are the parents of two daughters and one son. Justin is the founder of Hey Salty, a strategic communications firm, while Emily is currently a stay-at-home mother to Pierce, 8, Ivy, 6, and Kip, 3.
“I am grateful to be able to stay home at this time in my life. It is the hardest job but certainly the most rewarding,” said Emily.
Having that first-hand experience has underscored Emily’s commitment to helping coordinate a group for moms of children from birth to age 5. She puts her social acumen into practice by bringing together an average of more than 100 attendees each month at Bridge Bible Church.
Known as “b.moms,” the group’s purpose is to help moms navigate motherhood and connect with others through peer support, new friendships and purposeful camaraderie.
“We are focused on creating a community and being around others in the same phase of life. It can be so life-giving to enjoy conversation and a hot meal together,” said Emily. “It is such an important ministry to have that available to women during what is a really intense time in families’ lives.”
Participants do not have to be church members or have any religious conviction. The group meets every third Thursday of the month from September through May, from 9 to 11 a.m., with a new group set to start Sept. 17. Cost to participate is $85 for the year; scholarships are available for those who qualify. Prior registration is required at https://thebridgebiblechurch.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/3693100.
“We all need someone to reach out to who is going through something similar, especially when getting young kids out of the house can feel like a huge challenge,” said Emily. “It is 100% worth it for moms to have something rewarding and renewing.”
As for the Salters family, this back-to-school season will bring change to their household.
“We’re stepping into a new phase where I’ll have three children in school, at least two days a week, with our toddler going to preschool,” said Emily. “While I’m looking forward to some rejuvenation with more time to myself, I will really miss having at least one kid at home.”
Q&A: Three Questions with Emily Salters
Q. We often talk with mothers in phases of life that can seem lonely or isolating, especially as they raise young children. What advice do you have for respite and renewal for women going through that phase of life?
A. Having a routine can be helpful. Sleep can be hard to come by when you have babies, toddlers, and even older children, but on those nights when you can get sleep, it’s helpful to get up before the kids wake up. Any little moment could be helpful to you, especially if you can go on a walk or anything to move your body. Reading, meditating, or having a moment with your husband to ground you before you start the day gives you more energy and patience. Give yourself grace. Know that having young children is a season. It does pass; remind yourself of that and find a group of moms to be with who are encouraging to you.
Q. What should families in the Kern County area know more about in their community?
A. Bakersfield is such a wonderful place to raise kids. There are so many camps your child could attend to fit any interest. Free activities at the library and opportunities abound here.
Q. What is your best message for local parents?
A. Be the friend that you want to have. If you want to be invited to something, invite someone else to something. If you want someone to call you and ask you how you’re doing, call them and ask how they’re doing. I think that approach can go a long way. As with most things in life, you get out what you put into something. Put yourself out there. You can have a positive impact.
