It’s funny how fast an ordinary day can turn into a rescue mission. That was the case when a black-and-white tuxedo kitten unexpectedly followed my son and his girlfriend home as they walked through our neighborhood. The kitten quickly became enamored with them, and vice versa; my son even named him Douglas before they reached home. As much as I wanted to help, I needed to make sure he was healthy and safe to be around my own animals. Luckily, the veterinary team at VCA was able to squeeze us in.

Once we knew he was okay, we gave him a much-needed flea bath. My dog Lincoln and cats Pickle and Oz seemed to accept him, but I knew we couldn’t keep him. I contacted people who might help locate his owner, checked local lost-pet pages, and posted his photos on social media. No one claimed him, but fortunately, we found Douglas a loving home with my son’s friend.

The experience reminded me how difficult it can be to know what to do when an animal shows up at your door or is found wandering the streets. That’s why it’s comforting to know organizations like Bakersfield Strays are there to help. In “Bakersfield Strays: Building a Path From the Streets to Safety,” on page 8, readers can learn how dedicated volunteers feed, shelter, and protect stray animals while working to place them in foster and, ultimately, permanent homes.

Speaking of supporting good causes, this fall marks the return of ArtFest, the signature fundraising gala for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County. In “A Groovy Night with a Greater Purpose: BGCKC's ArtFest Brings the Art and Music of the 1970s to Life,” you’ll learn how organizers are switching things up with a fun new theme. Rather than featuring a single artist, this year’s ArtFest will celebrate the 1970s through its music, imagery, and iconic cultural inspirations. This month’s Hello Happy Mama features Emily Salters, a former Kern County teacher and stay-at-home mom who uses her outgoing personality to support and connect with other moms. In “Hello, Happy Mama: Emily Salters — A Vibrant Mama,” on page 20, Callie Collins shares how Emily and her husband, Justin, are raising their three children while she coordinates “b.moms,” a group for mothers with children from birth through age five at Bridge Bible Church. Through the group, Emily creates a welcoming community where moms can connect, form friendships, and encourage one another.

September celebrates Mayflower Day on the 16th, marking the day the Mayflower set sail from England in 1620. For Andrea Rose’s reading recommendations, check out “The Real Mayflower Stories: Uncovering the History, Hardships, and Heroes of the 1620 Voyage” on page 18. She provides several favorite books that explore this important chapter of American history.

As the memes remind us, this is the beginning of the “-ber” months. I’m happy to share that Douglas not only has a new name but lots of love at his new home. I’d call that a happy ending, although he may not be feeling quite as cheerful after his recent neutering! Jokes aside, it’s rewarding to know we played a small role in helping Douglas find a FUR-ever family. As the season changes, it’s also a wonderful reminder of the genuine joy that comes from lending a helping hand and making a difference in the lives of people and animals in our community.
