Earth Day has a way of reminding us that caring for our planet isn’t about grand gestures—it’s about the everyday choices families make, the places we love, and the traditions we build together. We asked our readers, “How does your family celebrate Earth Day? Any favorite local parks, trails, or community events?” and “What’s one simple way your family helps reduce waste at home?” We hope their ideas inspire new traditions and eco‑friendly habits.
  • “We celebrate every weekend by walking around our neighborhood and picking up trash to keep our community safe and clean. We have repurposed old toys into gardens and gone on hikes to demonstrate how precious the Earth is.” – Lindsay Panick
  • “We like to celebrate by taking the kids to go hiking to the Kern River Canyon and Wind Wolves Preserve.” “We have a waste bin for compost in which we use for our plants.” – Jailene Cortes
  • “Planting trees with the community.” “We don’t use a lot of disposable items, only reusable ones.” – Angela Arrendondo
  • “Pray and thank God for his blessings to be outside.” “Recycling cans/bottles.” – Cece Jovan
  • “Go to Wind Wolves with my family and dog.” “Recycle!” - Ariana Harmon
  • “Volunteer at park cleanup and recycling.” – Martha Fetzik-Goldman
  • “We go on a hike to the bluff and have a picnic in the park, spend outdoor time together.” “Recycle & reuse when possible.” – Karen Orellano
  • “We pick up trash throughout the streets in our neighborhood and recycle and reuse.” – Luis Lopez
  • “Going to Hart park! Walking around the park and talking about different flowers, trees, and also picking up trash to keep the earth clean.” “Reuse everything you can!” – Christine Gonzalez
  • “My family likes to plant flowers and go on hikes to celebrate.” “One simple way we like to reduce waste is using reusable bottles.” – Ciara Navarrete

Quick Ways to Celebrate:
  • Take a family walk at a new local park
  • Pick up 10 pieces of litter
  • Swap one single‑use item for a reusable one
  • Plant something—anything!
  • Turn off the lights for one hour in the evening

Easy Waste‑Reducing Swaps:

  • Reusable snack bags and drink bottles instead of plastic
  • Use cloth napkins and dishcloths instead of paper towels
  • A weekly “leftovers night” to clear out the fridge
  • Reusable silicone baking mats instead of parchment
  • Composting scraps instead of tossing them out
