November is a month for stories — the ones we read, and the ones we live. As the days grow shorter and the season leans into cozy, it’s the perfect time to celebrate Picture Book Month and Gratitude Month side by side. Picture books invite us to slow down and see the world through wonder-filled eyes. Gratitude reminds us to notice the little things — the giggles, the messes, the moments that make your families uniquely yours.

This month, why not blend the two? Creating a family picture book is a joyful way to reflect, connect, and turn everyday memories into something magical. Here’s how to get started…

Step 1: Gather Your Story Ingredients

Pick a theme to guide your book. Choose one of these or invent your own:
  • “A Day in Our Life” — morning to night snapshots
  • “Family Favorites” — foods, games, sayings
  • “Little Author, Big Illustrator” — kids lead the story
  • “Generations Together” — past meets present

Let each family member brainstorm ideas, draw pictures, or share stories to include.

Step 2: Collect Photos, Drawings & Mementos

Mix media for a rich, personal feel.

  • Print photos or sketch scenes from memory
  • Add ticket stubs, leaf rubbings, or recipe cards
  • Use speech bubbles, captions, or “fun facts” to bring each page to life

Encourage kids to decorate with stickers, stamps, or doodles.

Step 3: Build Your Book

Assemble your pages into a real book.

  • Fold printer paper in half and staple along the edge
  • Use cardstock or cereal box cardboard for a sturdy cover

Let kids design the cover with seasonal colors or favorite characters.

Step 4: Share & Celebrate

Host a mini “book launch” at home.

  • Read the book aloud in silly voices or dramatic flair
  • Record a video reading to share with relatives
  • Display it on a shelf or coffee table for guests to enjoy

Bonus: Make a second copy as a gift for grandparents!

Step 5: Keep the Story Going

Add new pages throughout the year.

  • Create a “Next Chapter” section for upcoming adventures
  • Leave blank pages for future drawings or quotes

This turns your craft into a living family archive — full of laughter, love, and growth.
