St. Patrick's Day is celebrated each year on March 17 to honor St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, but it's also a celebration of Irish culture. Traditionally celebrated around the world by those who can trace their lineage to the Emerald Isle, however millions of others with no such heritage also join in the festivities. This means anyone, Irish or only Irish in spirit, can take part in St. Patrick's Day celebrations!

There are many fun ways to commemorate this special day. Here are a few ways you and your kids can celebrate:

1. Eat Green Foods. Green is a prominent color for St. Patrick's Day and Ireland in general. Many people enjoy food and beverages that have been dyed green.

2. Bake Soda Bread. Get family and friends in the kitchen and whip up a batch of delicious Irish Soda Bread. This is a great recipe for kids because there's no need to wait for dough to rise because baking soda serves as the leavening agent.

3. Listen to Irish Music. Tune in to U2, Thin Lizzy, The Cranberries, Snow Patrol, The Chieftains, The Dubliners, Planxty, and many others to get into a festive spirit.

4. Participate in St. Patrick's Day Events. Many events are held in major cities across the country, providing ways for people to participate. In Bakersfield, you can participate in a St. Patrick’s Day 5k on March 15th. See more local Happenings on page 40.

5. Host a St. Patrick’s Day Party. For St. Patrick’s Day party planning ideas, check out our “You Can Do It” section on page 36.
